Dr. A. Maziar Zafari is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Cardiovascular Training Program at Emory University School of Medicine. After spending his childhood and adolescence in Iran, he returned to Germany in 1979 where he graduated from Hainberg Gymnasium in Göttingen. Dr. Zafari attended from 1981-1990 University of Cologne's (Universität zu Köln) School of Medicine and College of Philososophy for his combined studies in medicine and history of medicine. Subsequently, he moved to the United States to complete his residency training in Internal Medicine/Primary Care at Yale University. During this period he spent three months at the National Institutes of Health, working in the research laboratory of Dr. William C. Roberts on the role of coronary calcium deposition in coronary atherosclerosis. From 1993 to 1994 he was Chief Medical Resident for the Yale University Primary Care Program and an Instructor at Yale School of Medicine. In 1994 he began a two-year research fellowship in vascular biology working in the laboratory of Dr. Kathy K. Griendling characterizing the role of the vascular NAD(P)H oxidase in angiotensin II-induced vascular growth, followed by two years of clinical training in general cardiology at Emory University School of Medicine. In 1998 he joined the Cardiology Faculty at Emory University and the Atlanta VA Medical Center in the rank of Assistant Professor and has focused on investigating the role of genetic markers in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases. In 2004 Dr. Zafari was appointed Director of the Cardiovascular Training Program at Emory, and advanced to the rank of Associate Professor in 2005. In addition to publication of scientific contributions and review articles in peer-reviewed journals, he has served as editor of the Hospital Physician Cardiology Board Review Manuals, has coauthored a review of Internal Medicine, and has published prose and poetry in the United States and abroad.
Since becoming a faculty member at Emory in 1998, Dr. Zafari has been on staff at the Division of Cardiology at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. He has actively participated in the expansion of the clinical enterprise at the VA Medical Center, where he performs cardiac catheterization, echocardiography and follows patients on the inpatient services as well as in the General Cardiology, Heart Failure, and Post-Heart Transplant Clinics. In 2003 he was recognized in the “Guide to America’s Top Physicians” by the Consumers’ Research Council of America in Washington, DC. As Chairman of the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Committee at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, he led a team of healthcare providers in a comprehensive trial to improve clinical outcomes of patients suffering in-hospital cardiac arrest. This quality improvement trial resulted in significant improvement in clinical outcomes, and is cited in the updated 2005 Emergency Cardiovascular Care and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Guidelines published by the America Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology.
Dr. Zafari has been actively involved in teaching medical students in following courses and examinations: Sophomore Clinical Methods, Junior Oral Examinations at Grady Memorial Hospital and the Atlanta VA Medical Center, Current Mechanisms in Cardiovascular Disease: From Bench to the Bedside, and the M3 Teaching Course. He has mentored more than 20 residents and fellows in clinical and translational research, and has received teaching awards by cardiology fellows and the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program at Emory. Since January 2003 he has served as the Series Editor for the Hospital Physician Cardiology Board Review Manuals, a bimonthly publication with a nationwide circulation of 20,000, which provides state-of-the-art reviews in various subjects in cardiovascular medicine. Dr Zafari has also coauthored a medical textbook designed for medical students preparing for their final examinations in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. This review is now in its 6th edition and is published in Germany.
From 2004 to 2013 he was the Director of Emory's Cardiovascular Training Program, the largest cardiovascular training program in the United States with dedicated basic scientist, clinical investigator and clinician educator tracks. His accomplishments include further enriching of the Cardiovascular Training Program at Emory by establishing dedicated research tracks in clinical and translational research, and expansion of subspecialty training in Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging, Heart Failure/Transplantation and in Adult Congenital Heart Disease. As Director, Zafari was committed to balancing educational and research-oriented activities with patient care in a manner that attracted the brightest fellows to Emory.
Dr. Zafari practices general cardiology at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center, taking care of patients with chronic heart failure in his weekly Heart Failure Clinic as well as supervising cardiology fellows biweekly in the Atlanta VAMC's Cardiology Clinics.
In addition, he performs and supervises diagnostic cardiac catheterization and supervises and reads transthoracic, stress and transesophageal echocardiography studies as well as exercise testing at the Atlanta VAMC.
Dr. Zafari is the Chairman of the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Committee at the Atlanta VAMC as well as the Director of the Coronary Care Unit.

Dr. Naqvi completed her undergraduate studies at Marymount University in New York City and graduated from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York in 2004. She completed her residency at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware, serving as Chief Resident in 2004. After residency, she spent five years in private practice with Pike Creek Associates in Women Care in Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Naqvi then moved to New Jersey, where she now lives with her husband and three kids.

Dr. Sayed K. Ali currently serves as faculty in internal medicine and palliative care at the Orlando Veteran’s Medical Center, Florida. A recipient of the United States Army Health Professions Scholarship, he received his BA and MD from State University of New York at Stony Brook and later completed his residency in Internal Medicine at North Shore University Hospital, Long Island, New York.

Dr. Mohammad Shenasa graduated from University of Tehran, Faculty of Medicine in 1975 and was awarded a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania in 1975. In 1977 Dr. Shenasa went to Guy’s Hospital, University of London as a senior house officer. Dr. Shenasa then returned to the United States and completed his fellowship (1979-1982) in Cardiology and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He stayed on as an assistant professor of medicine until 1982. Dr. Shenasa then took a position as Professor of Medicine and Surgery and was the Director of Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Shenasa took a sabbatical as a visiting professor to the University of Munster, Germany (1990-1992). He is currently at the Department of Cardiovascular Services at O’Connor Hospital in San Jose California and is the founder of the Heart and Rhythm Medical Group. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, European Society of Cardiology, and the Heart rhythm Society. He has served as a chairperson and speaker of many societies. Dr. Shenasa is a reviewer for many cardiology journals and has published extensively in a variety of subjects related to heart rhythm disorders. His current interests include atrial fibrillation, catheter ablation, and rhythm management devices. He has lectured nationally and internationally on many topics related to cardiology. He is the senior editor of Cardiac Mapping, which is an electrophysiology textbook; the newest edition of which was just released in 2013. The next edition is in preparation for 2017. Faiyaz Jaffer attained a BA Degree from SUNY Stony Brook University, after completing his education in Political Science and Religious Studies, under the supervision of the renowned scholar in Islamic Studies, William Chittick. Furthermore, he has recently completed his MA degree in Islamic Studies (UK), with his dissertation entitled, "The Role of Lamentation Poetry in Preserving the Karbala Narrative During the Imami Period," and has had some of his research published by academic journals. Sheikh Faiyaz pursued classical Islamic Studies for several years in the Islamic Seminary of the Holy City of Karbala, near the shrine of the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, Imam Hussain.
Sheikh Faiyaz has lectured at various universities, seminars, and workshops including Islamic centers across the United States, Canada, Europe, East Africa, and the Middle East. Furthermore, he engages in research at the Islamic Research Institute in New York. He is currently working closely with the young members and future leaders of the community by leading discussions for the Al-Qaim Youth Group. Sheikh Faiyaz has been making strides in the New York area by taking part in a number of interfaith seminars and discussions in the aspiration of increasing dialogue with various faith leaders.

Shabeer was co-founder of the Ahlul-Bayt Society at UCF, and served as President and Vice President of the Society. He also Teaches at the Islamic Education Center in Orlando. He has a diverse professional background with work in Finance, Consulting, and Informatics, most recently working as a Data Scientist in the Defense & Space sector. He is a graduate of the University of Central Florida (UCF), having a Bachelor's in Economics with dual minors in Mathematics & Computer Science, and a Master's in Engineering also from UCF. He is a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Shabeer hopes to inspire others to be their best, through his actions & words.

The Dean of the American University of Barbados, School of Medicine, Dr. Shabih Haider Zaidi completed his MBBS from Dow Medical College (DMC) in 1966. Following this he proceeded to UK for FRCS. He returned to Pakistan in 1972, and started teaching at his alma mater and rose to be the Professor and head of the department of ENT. He was also Principal of Sindh Medical College, Head of Medical Education, at DMC, Sindh Medical College and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center until 2001. Over the years, he was awarded Fellowships from of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), International College of Surgeons (FICS), and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan (FCPS). Dr. Zaidi founded the Department of Medical Education at DMC.
Dr. Zaidi has written several books and monographs, and published over a hundred scientific papers. He has also worked as an advisor and a consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO), and was a visiting Professor to the University Sains, Kelantan, Malaysia. Dr. Zaidi relocated to England in 2001 where he joined the University of Liverpool Teaching Hospital as an ENT Consultant. In 2004 he joined one of the University of Birmingham teaching NHS hospitals.

Zehra Naqvi is an attorney, community organizer, and writer. She has collaborated with a number of organizations on interfaith, intrafaith, and minority-focused initiatives.
Zehra has also consulted for non-profit organizations including South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) and the Universal Muslim Association of America (UMAA). While working with SAALT, Zehra helped organize the 2015 Young Leaders Institute and the Be The Change 2015 day of service. While working with UMAA, Zehra organized the UMAAraise leadership development initiative and the UMAAinterfaith initiative.
Zehra has also published a number of compelling thought pieces, including “What’s It Like Being Muslim in America?” for the Huffington Post, “Why I’m Shia” for Muharram in Manhattan, and “Having Faith in Interfaith” for xojane.com.
While based in New York, Zehra collaborated with local Muslim leaders and New York City officials to address issues of concern for the local Muslim American community including hate crimes and profiling. She has also done multiple presentations at houses of worship, academic institutions, and national conferences, speaking about Islamophobia, community organizing, and interfaith engagement. Zehra is currently based in northern Virginia.
